Anti-gay bill signed into law by President Y. K. Museveni
President Y. K. Museveni, has signed the bill into law, with appreciation from majority of Ugandans who see “Westernization” as a threat to the country’s’ values. Speaking at the signing function, the President Museveni said “homosexuality was the result of “nurture” NOT “nature”. He added that most gay people in Uganda were “mercenary”. Inspite of threat from global institutions and personalities like US president Barrack Obama, President Museveni finally signed the Anti—Homosexuality Bill 2009 into.law. Under the law, the penalty for same-sex conduct is now life imprisonment. The “attempt to commit homosexuality” incurs a penalty of seven years as does “aiding and abetting” homosexuality. A person who “keeps a house, room, set of rooms, or place of any kind for purposes of homosexuality” also faces seven years’ imprisonment.
