Why every Company, WhatsApp group, or Community must start a benevolent fund

In every great company, performance alone is not enough. What keeps teams strong is compassion.

When a colleague loses a loved one, no pay slip can heal that pain. Yet, when fellow staff contribute from the heart through a benevolent fund, it sends a powerful message: you are not alone. A company or community that encourages staff to join a benevolent fund builds more than financial security; it builds emotional safety. That kind of culture drives loyalty, teamwork, and genuine high performance. People who feel cared for give more. They protect the brand, they support one another, and they stay longer. In the end, compassion is not just charity; it is a business advantage.

During strategy execution support, when performance is struggling, I am often asked why. And when we undertake a culture audit, what we discover is never a lack of skill; it is a disconnect, a lack of compassion, and quiet selfishness. Teams hit targets only when they trust each other beyond the job description.

A benevolent fund reminds everyone that we rise together or not at all. It turns colleagues into a community, and that is where real performance begins. Companies with a staff benevolent fund that is well managed outperform peers.

There was once a village where people fetched water from the same well. When someone fell sick, the villagers rushed to help. But one day, the strongest man in the village fell ill. Everyone assumed someone else would help. No one did. By the time they gathered, it was too late. The well that united them had turned into a symbol of silence.

That village is your WhatsApp group.

When we started these groups, we said it was for connection. Old classmates. Workmates. Church friends. Neighbours. Yet when crisis strikes, death, hospital bills, and school fees, we scramble to collect money. Some contribute. Others stay silent. Some even leave the group. Not because they do not care, but because there is no system.

Without structure, compassion dies. Love without order becomes noise. Every time we start a fundraiser from zero, we waste time, energy, and unity. A benevolent fund is not about money. It is about fairness. It replaces chaos with dignity. It is about a structured social support system.

Here is the simple truth:

a) Everyone will face a hard day.

b) Nobody plans for death or sickness.

c) When it happens, you need more than words; you need structure. You need real support.

A benevolent fund is that structure. Each member contributes a small amount regularly, say, 20,000 or 30,000 shillings a month. When misfortune comes to any member, the group responds immediately, not through endless messages but through a system. It is unity turned into policy. Some will say, “We are not ready.” But readiness never comes. You start small and grow. That is how real communities are built on commitment, not convenience.

Our parents had burial societies and village credit groups. They were not rich, but they were organised. We have WhatsApp, yet we are poorer in spirit. We can type “condolences,” but we cannot mobilise 10,000 shillings without argument.

A benevolent fund is how we turn sympathy into solidarity. It is the new village well; digital, transparent, and fair.

Let your WhatsApp group rise above gossip and greetings. Let it become a community that stands with its people. Form your benevolent fund today.

Do not wait for another message saying, “We have lost a member.”

Let the next message be, “Our fund has got it covered.”

Join. Contribute. Belong. Be assured of structured social support in your times of need.

That is the Twezimbe way: structured compassion for a stronger community.
