Will National Identity Card Registration be a success?

The National Identity Card registration kicked off on Monday 14th 2014 with a low turn-up. The activity started with challenges of few and late delivery of kits to some parishes.

Registration in villages has been slow with people complaining registration forms being written in English. This proved a problem as most rural population cannot understand English. The Internal Affairs Ministry spokesperson Pamela Ankunda, said the ministry is equipping its personnel with more skills so as to add impulse to the process.

The Ugx 285 billion exercise is scheduled for four months and its targeting 18 million people. Around 10,000 people were registered in Kampala in the first week. A total of 52,601 was recorded by 23rd April 2014. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the turn-up is likely to increase as time goes on.

Internal Affairs Minister, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima urged those eligible to register at their respective parishes. He added that National Identity Cards are aimed at reducing crime by providing reliable identification of suspects. It will also make government planning easier. I call upon you all to support the project.
