“‘Have you no fear of God at all?’ he said. ‘You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus,’ he said ‘remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ ‘Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied, ‘today you will be with me in paradise”, Luke 23:35-43
What is leadership? What are the qualities of a good leader? Get a piece of paper and write five names of people you consider as the best leaders in your opinion. What makes you think they are the best leaders?
One of the universal qualities of great leadership is selfless – doing greater good for the greater majority through actions and clarity of communication. Put 20 people of the same rank and file in one room, and give them a challenge, a new leader shall emerge naturally. Why? No one needs permission to lead. They start leading.
As Mr. Strategy, I interact with many people on a day to day basis. When you ask for a volunteer, a natural leader is not afraid to raise up their hand first. They don’t care what others would think if they gave a wrong answer. The focus is on trying. Doing something. Speaking up so that their point of view is hard.
Jesus Christ is a living example of great leadership: leading by example – action. And the clarity of communication with timeless messages. Jesus performed so many miracles and several acts of mercy on his own initiative. And from His teachings, we learn the power of words. All the parables are timeless. Another reason to proclaim, Jesus is King. Turn to your neighbor and say, Jesus, is King.
Start by looking around you: what unfairness do you see to so many people? What small action can you do to fix it in your limited capacity? Go out and do something. And tell your closest friend or neighbor what you have just done and how you would like them to join and why they must join. You don’t have to go far to start making an impact. Start where you are with what you have. If it is a worthy cause you will gain followers instantly. That is how leadership works.
Remember, actions speak louder than words. No one wants to follow someone who talks too much with no or little action. If you want your children to read books, you must go to the Library they see you reading so that they may join you. This practice of putting on the TV and asking the children to go read books cannot develop a reading culture.
