The ever-rising #covid19 cases in Uganda

    May 12, 2020 / No Comments

When you think too much about something, it becomes your reality. The coronavirus pandemic news is all over the Internet that no one would be blamed for dreaming about it. At the start, everyone was worried. Wearing face masks. Keeping social distance. And of course, few cars on the road. I have noticed things are slowly going back to normal. At my home, I see people walking by past the curfew hours of 7:0pm. And these move in groups. There are no designated numbers to call to report such people. At our local supermarket, they have always closed at 4pm.…

Homily for Wednesday, Fifth Week of Easter Acts

    May 12, 2020 / No Comments

Readings Acts 15:1-6 Jn 15:1-8 There is always a temptation to put limits on God, to say, in effect, that God cannot do this or that unless this or that happens. We find such a scenario in today’s first reading. Some Jewish Christians from Jerusalem came down to the church in Antioch and told converts to the faith from paganism, Gentile Christians, ‘Unless you have yourselves circumcised in the tradition of Moses, you cannot be saved’. They were saying in effect, ‘Much as God would like to include you among those who will inherit eternal life, he is powerless unless…

What is your child watching online?

    May 12, 2020 / No Comments

“Bad things come with good ones;” they say. As many professionals in most industries are feeling the pinch of the COVID-19 lockdown, the players in the porn industry are smiling to the bank. Ever since the pandemic began, spending on porn worldwide has nearly doubled. As social distancing helps to stop the spread of the SARS-CoV-2, it has offered convenient workplaces for webcams to stream their videos privately online. According to an online article by the Economist, the pornography industry has moved online and there is surge in live streaming of webcams. In France alone, a third of the 35,000…

Centenary Bank Chief on the future of banking

    May 12, 2020 / No Comments

Whatever innovations in jazzy products that come, they must be in a context where people’s money is safe and people have confidence that it is safe”, Dr Simon Kagugube, Acting Managing Director of CERUDEB. [Note: This article was first published in Summit Business August 2009 issue.] The recent entry of many international banks into the Ugandan market has created stiff competition in the industry and brought in a wave of innovative products. Banks are increasingly looking for a competitive edge through innovation, cost-cutting, and mass marketing. Mustapha Bernabas Mugisa met with Dr. Simon Kagugube, the Acting Managing Director of Centenary…

Homily for Tuesday, Fifth Week of Easter

    May 12, 2020 / No Comments

Readings Acts 14:19-28 Jn 14:27-31a. In this morning’s first reading we are told that as Paul and Barnabas made their way back through the churches they had founded, ‘they put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith’. We all need encouragement, especially with regard to our faith and our relationship with the Lord. We need to keep putting fresh heart into each other, encouraging each other to persevere in the faith. That is what we find Jesus doing in the gospel reading. It is the night of the last supper; the disciples are feeling discouraged.…
