In 1970 during the Cold War when USA was at war in Vietnam, a man by the name of Jim Croce having been married for 5 years without child was told that his wife Ingrid was expecting. Filled with a mixture of terror and joy, Jim wrote a song called Time in a bottle in anticipation of a time he’d spend with his son.
In the song, he wrote:
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day
‘Til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you…
Jim died 3 years later never to see his son grow old…
This got me thinking…
How we live our lives in anticipation of a future we never see… How we work so hard to make more money and by the time we have it, we’re too old to enjoy it… How we plant lawns and never get time to sit in them… How we build mansions, but expensive TVs only to be enjoyed by the maid… How hard we try, take our children to expensive schools, except they grow so fast, they leave us lonely… Like the parable of the rich fool, we stash away loads of cash only to leave it when we pass to be fought for by relatives…
Today, may you make a deliberate decision to enjoy every day of your life. You’re locked down but enjoy the leave – you may never get it again. You’re not rich yet, but u actually don’t need much money to have fun. You’re not married but enjoy the freedom that comes with singlehood. You’re married to a ‘bad man’ but you don’t know how many would kill to have him.
Enjoy life, it’s not as long as you think…
