Uganda Decides 2021: make time to vote

You need to focus on the future because that is where you will spend the rest of your life. That is why every Ugandan must make time and vote on 14th January 2021. There are five reasons to vote:

1.     The community and the young people who do not vote, depend on you.

Only those who vote to determine the priorities of the government. Every candidate has a manifesto, detailing what they plan to do once elected to office. They have explained how they plan to apply the money collected from taxes.

By now, you have looked at each of the candidate manifestoes to determine their priorities and specifically who will spend what on health care, education, infrastructure, science and technology, agriculture, and economic transformation, and more. It is these kinds of investments that determine the future of the country and the general wellbeing and happiness of the population.

If you do not vote, you will have let your children, community, and all those who do not have a vote down!

2.     Not voting has consequences

Although not mandatory, if you do not vote, you stand to suffer the consequences for not having done so.

The amount of taxes you pay, how the taxes are applied and used, the quality of roads and infrastructure you see, etc. all depend on the people you vote into power. This is not just about the president, but the team you give to work with the President.

Go and vote. You may decide to vote to give a chance to the current government to continue in service, if you are happy, or vote to change to someone else. During general elections, that is the only time your voice is heard as a citizen. Go and exercise your voice so that you don’t regret when the candidate who wins was not your favourite one, yet your vote would have made a difference! Just imagine if the other 1 million voters did not show up and vote! It would affect the outcome.

That is why your vote matters. One vote at a time wins the election.

I wish you peaceful elections. Remember to stay away from danger. You need your life to celebrate when your candidate wins. And if you lose, there will be another chance in 2026. So, do not lose heart.

In any race, there are winners and losers. That is the law of competition.

May the best candidates win.
