    Cyber security increase in Uganda

    June 11, 2019 / No Comments

Security services provider Summit Consulting Limited says an increase of 40 cases is too significant a number given that police has not deliberately put a direct mechanism for any victim of cyber crime to report. On the other hand, government has prioritised investment in cyber security training and equipment at police and Ministry of Information and Communication Technology. ”The more the people go online, the more you expect a lot of mistakes because the attack vector increases so somebody has more people to attack. But also, there is generally no nationwide strategy for creating awareness to managing the cybercrime,” Mr.…

The only way to overcome fraud challenges

    June 5, 2019 / No Comments

When I was in prison, visiting, an inmate came right after my presentation and said “Mustapha I really appreciate your talk on in-mate reformation. But how do you advise someone like me serving a jail term for a crime I never committed?” This was my first face to face with a victim of fraud, 10 years ago. Then an Accounts Officer at a local NGO, the victim was serving a jail term for misappropriation of petty cash. He was a young accountant in his first job. He explained to me that he had been requested by his supervisor, the Finance…

The rise and fall of Victoria Basin Savings and Microfinance Cooperative Trust Ltd (VBS)

    June 5, 2019 / 1 Comment

The demise of Victoria Basin Savings and Microfinance Cooperative Trust Ltd was a big blow to so many people’s livelihood. Founded in 1990, this once vibrant entity started operating as a building society and then transformed into a SACCO. It became an immediate success. However, changes in the legal status (from a building society into a SACCO) called for better ways of doing things especially an effective and independent Board of directors to provide effective oversight, risk management and going concern. Unfortunately, its leadership and members did not respond to the new realities.  It was reported that one of its…

    Your DESTINY revolves around YOU

    May 31, 2019 / No Comments

Over the 10 years I have been working in various institutions among the many lessons I learnt is to always recall that it is YOU and YOU alone that shapes and fulfills your destiny. Don’t come to work because your friend goes to work, don’t come to work early because your C.E.O has challenged you to come to work early, don’t come to work because it is the trend whereby after graduating from university or college you know the next step is to find a job. Come to work because of YOU and YOU alone. Where YOU want to be…

Story of a football game, how to win at the work place

    May 31, 2019 / No Comments

It is a game of two objectives: Score many goals and do not concede. All the 11 players and the coach, and club administration focus on the winning any match the team plays both in the short term and long term. Much as the keeper is responsible for stopping balls from entering his goal (not conceding a goal); any opportunity a Keeper has to score, they attempt to score. You can see this usually in world cup matches where the Keeper sometimes runs to the other goal to try to score a corner kick at a huge risk to the…
